Sharing Frugal Luxuries with "Life and Beauty" Magazine: Holiday Decorating~On Any Budget

"Happiness is a sort of atmosphere you can live in," notes the writer Adele Rogers St. Johns, and I can think of no festival that encourages us to devote ourselves to creating an attractive, happy atmosphere as much as the winter holidays.

The decorating of houses as part of winter festivals harkens back to antiquity. The creative slight of hand that transforms your ordinary home into a visual celebration of the season can be surprising simple and economical!

P.S. I'm getting a kick out of your Steampunk Christmas...clever idea to use the wings as a wreath on the mirror!

Excellent ideas!

When we were at Colonial Williamsburg, we saw a lot of pictures of how they decorated at Christmas.

It was mostly with items brought in from the outside (they grew pomegranates especially for Christmas!) and it was all beautiful.

Sometimes it was mixed in with family silver and even simple pottery.

Of course, you know you were the inspiration behind a lot of my thrify buying of beautiful items (long ago but neither of us are getting older, right?). ;)

Wow, what a compliment Brenda!!! Thank you!

Of course, I must confess that I've been borrowing heavily from the past for years!!! So funny that you mention Williamsburg as it was after viewing Christmas photos from there that my interest in natural decorating was fully sparked. Consequently, I've been looking to my garden...and the produce stands...for most of my holiday and party decorating...for decades. :)))

Love love love to you my friend!

Warmly,
Tracey

P.S. Hahahah...you are so right...as my dad always says regarding aging..."do what I do, live in denial"! Ha...and I've been taking his excellent advice for years with happy results! The mind is a powerful thing. :))) x0x

Tracey,

Haven't bought anything for decorating Christmas this year and it has been fun just using what I have.

Dining room has my 25 year old tree that looked so terrible I hadn't used it for years as a tree but used the greenery. This year I put it up and it made a great tree for the nature look I was wanting! Dried Lemon slices earlier this year and hung them on tree along with pinecones and other natural elements. The lemons look so pretty with a light behind them!

Made a mantel out of scrap things I had- love it!

Mary Ellen...you've really outdone yourself this year (just finished visiting your blog)! How amazing that all that lovely, festive atmosphere was created using what you already had on hand.

"FRUGAL LUXURIES: Simple Pleasures to Enhance Your Life and Comfort Your Soul" was written by Tracey McBride and published by Bantam Books, NY, in 1997. It was the first of its genre to synergize the elements of simplicity, frugality and gracious living.

After more than a decade, FRUGAL LUXURIES has never been out of print and is now more relevant than ever.

"It's our hope that a new generation, faced with a teetering economy, will also find this information helpful and enlightening."
