They are a great antidote to feeling deprived.

I have a lot of frugal luxuries, but the one I like most is to pick up mismatched china, silverware and crystal at garage sales and use it for nice candlelight dinners. The kids tease me about my candlelight dinners. They are more frequent in the cold winter months and cheer everyone up.

The up side of this is that it's real easy to put on a nice spread for Sunday dinner, a birthday, or holidays. My two girls really appreciate it. And, now they've left home, my husband isn't complaining about our candlelight dinners either! Much nicer than paying the prices at an expensive restaurant. And the atmosphere can't be beat!

JeanAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2642174337877516716.post-5189106878884139362009-05-30T11:34:59.369-07:002009-05-30T11:34:59.369-07:00I hope I'm not too late as well! I love your book...I hope I'm not too late as well! I love your books and read them again and again. They are such affirmation for the soul that beauty is all around us. So many gorgeous soul-feeding inspirations are just right there in front of us on any given ordinary day if we just open our eyes. I love how you are able to describe how simple touches to a lovingly prepared meal or to a corner of your home are food for the spirit.

"Food for the spirit" is something my mom and I talk about frequently. She is the one who taught me that even on the tightest budget, I need to have fresh flowers for my home as food for the soul. She is so, so right! Sometimes I've only been able to squeeze in budgetary room for a single beautiful fresh flower. Clippings from bushes in my yard fill in the empty space in my favorite old ironstone pitcher (once part of a washstand pitcher and bowl set) and set off that single blossom so that it shines as the star that it is.

Today's frugal luxury is doing the finishing sanding on a number of "found" items (thrift store and garage sale treasures) before I throw myself a spray paint party! Most of my items will be painted black, but a few may end up in white. I can't wait to see if the transformations I visualize will happen. And the best part is the creative flow that I feel when I'm invested in creating something prettier from forgotten and neglected items.

Blessings on your day!

MichelleMichellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13406126581225348871noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2642174337877516716.post-27083397834858046932009-05-29T13:57:10.738-07:002009-05-29T13:57:10.738-07:00Tracey,

I already had the lunch that I had brought from home ready to eat at my desk. She decided to grab a sandwich and come to the office and have lunch with me at my desk. It was cheap and very relaxing to have this private time where we didn't have the hustle and bustle of people and waiters and could just sit, have our simple lunches and visit undistracted. It was so nice, we have plans to do it again. Maybe not at my desk, but at a nearby park next time.AngieBrumleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04634425166258369075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2642174337877516716.post-74445980071139584192009-05-22T21:18:28.674-07:002009-05-22T21:18:28.674-07:00One of my favorite frugal luxuries in working in m...One of my favorite frugal luxuries in working in my garden.
