Just thought you might enjoy taking a peek at the treasures Rosie and I found last weekend while hunting yard sales! At risk of sounding boastful ;) we paid a mere $5 for ALL of the items above! What blessings. I plan to add the little dessert~size set of plates to our daily dishes. They are the perfect size for serving forth a sandwich or snack. (Plus they're much more frugal, green and pretty than paper plates!)
I'm not quite sure what to do with the larger pieces (they are marked "Bavaria"!)but they were just too pretty to pass up! Any suggestions?

ReplyDeleteOh my word, those plates are beautiful. Is there somewhere that you can hang them on a wall? I remember seeing dishes like that years ago at my grannies. Loved them then, still love them. And wow, what a price. Wonderful giveaway again. Hugs
ReplyDeleteThey are so pretty! It's so nice to use pretty dishes like that for snacks and sandwiches on ordinary days. If you only paid a few cents each for them, it makes it a lot easier to justify using such lovely china for ordinary meals.

Hi SQ!!! You are so right...I love using pretty dishes everyday...it does make simple food seem to taste better! I think the poets were onto something when they wrote about "eating with our eyes"! The best thing about this strategy is that we won't fret too much if one of them gets broken because they only cost a song or two at the yard sale!

ReplyDeleteWithin the last couple of months, I must admit that plates are even more a passion than teacups (easier to store!). :)
I'm always finding beautiful plates at Goodwill and garage sales. Since I already own a few complete sets of dinnerware (purchased, thrifted, and inherited), I enjoy just purchasing dinner and/or salad plates with pretty designs.
Even simple food looks all elegant and uptown on pretty dishes. :)
Beautiful finds, Tracey! I love the idea of adding vintage plates to every day dishes instead of using paper plates. My family protested when we made the change last summer...but now they don't mention it at all! Funny how we get used to things.....

I agree Brenda, plates are MUCH easier to store that teacups...although...I am completely inspired by the way you store your teacup collection in shallow drawers. A very clever idea...it looks so pretty and tidy (probably better for the cups as well :) !

Thanks so much for your kind words Karen! You are right in that we humans do get used to change...eventually! That being said, it doesn't always come easily. We've been using this strategy since my kids were small and now they miss the "pretty" dishes when presented with the occasional paper plate (unless they are in charge of doing the dishes, of course ;)!

Tracey - those plates are incredible!! Especially for $5! I love the Bavaria plates I have a couple of those - really beautiful! You should check the priced on ebay and maybe resell them. I have one that I hung in my garden on the fence. I'm sure you'll come up with what you want to do with them.

This is my first visit to your blog, it won't be the last, either. I love your thrifted plates. I am not one to bring something into the house that I can't use whenever I feel like it...those kind of things can be found in the museum, not my house.

Oooo!!! SO lovely! I have several beautiful plates I have collected over the years. Some I use and some I just have hung on the walls. Well, had hung. They all came down to get the house ready to sell. Can't wait to have them back! You could make like a wall "quilt" with plates.

Very pretty plates! I'm big on using the nice stuff. We rarely use disposables. I've shocked friends by serving them on the fine china, then sticking it in the dishwasher. I know that goes against all the china rules, but honestly, no harm has come to them. I've been using one set of fine china as everyday dishes for 3 years now. The platinum band on everything is still very much intact. No harm done, and this method ensures we actually use our china.

Hi Clarice...yes...I was absolutely amazed when I heard the words, "five dollars", as I brought all my booty to be priced! What I neglected to mention was that I also bought an amazing, hand crafted, silk wrap skirt and two really pretty silk blouses...included in the same five dollar price!!! Some days we're just given gifts...and I sure appreciate each and every one of them.

ReplyDeleteI have such a weakness for pretty plates. We just redid our bathroom and on the vanity I have a pie stand, spray painted to match, with three pretty brown transferware plates in the slots. They were ones that I thrifted last year and they must have know they'd find the perfect spot. On the top plate I have facecloths, the middle level, toothpaste and dental floss and the bottom plate, pretty soaps.
I would love to enter your giveaway, I'm having a hard time finding this book. I have Frugal Luxuries and of course, LOVE it!

Great ideas Heather, and such perfect timing...my bathroom is in the midst of being de~cluttered (more of my "Order from Chaos" mode!) and I am looking around for pretty yet useful ways to organize what needs to be in there! I just happen to have several plate holders and I'm sure one of them would look quite nice tucked into a corner. Thank you so much for the suggestions and the nice words!
