I'm the reluctant one when it comes to tossing out those pretty but odd~lot salt and pepper shakers. Because of this, I have developed, over the years, numerous ways to re~purpose them! My most recent re~use is as...
Miniature Bulb Vases !

Easy as One... Two... Three
One: I went to my garden and plucked away three tiny onion bulbs from my pregnant onion (really...that's what they are called!).
Two: I dug up three lonely shakers (all were also sans lids...the center one is slightly broken at the top)cleaned them up and filled them with fresh water.
Three: Using size as my key, I set each bulb atop a water filled shaker and set them all on the window sill of my kitchen. Here they will be allowed to develop stronger, fuller roots so that they will thrive once they are transplanted back into the garden. In the meantime, we will enjoy them as they grow.
Beauty and function...a true frugal luxury!!

Audra, that is a great idea!! How cute that would be to give a set of various sized bulbs in vases...definitely unique! Or...they would also make fun place settings at gatherings/parties~~each guest could take theirs home as a gift!! Even older children (about 8 or more?) would love a take home a little gift like this from a garden tea party and the like!! Thanks so much for inspiring all this thought!

Hi Carol. Thank you so much for the kind words and for asking (I have to tell you that I view this question is a huge compliment). I'd be honored to give you a peek into how my brain works, if you're interested.
Most of my ideas are begat by other ideas...as well as budget constraints, desire and/or need.
As you know, of course, ALL are tempered by my philosophy to use what I already have... as opposed to purchasing anything new.
For example.
The idea for this little project (the salt and pepper shakers as mini bulb holders) was born from the post before it~~where I had used old mason jars as bulb holders.
Because I have been bitten by the gardening bug, I am trying to expand my garden and planters for spring (i.e., my desire/need).
Thus, I began looking around my tiny garden for things to split and/or transplant (a.k.a. free plants :)!
I saw that the pregnant onion I've had for years, had an overabundance of tiny bulbs that needed to be rooted and then replanted.
This brought to mind the recent mason~jar~bulb~project...which caused me to wish the onion bulbs were larger so I could root them inside mason jars too!!
Obviously, that was impossible, due to their tiny size. However, this little detail wasn't going to stop me. :) Instead, it caused me to hunt around the house for tiny rooting vessels that the baby onion bulbs WOULD fit atop.
I was rummaging though one of my china/glass closets to find such a thing when I spied the one~and~lonely salt and pepper shakers!!
I pulled them out and discovered that...not only did they work perfectly...they looked CHARMING!!
While I found several with lids intact, I ended up choosing the shakers with broken (or missing) lids. (I want to reserve those other shakers for future projects~~where the lids might be useful.)
That's it. Not much to it, and probably very much the way everyone else thinks...but...again...thanks so much for asking!
