One of the things I loved about your book Frugal Luxuries were the quotes you used at the beginning of each chapter. I love quotes too. Thanks for the link. Hugs

Hi Carol! I am most definitely a quote person! Mike used to tease me that I spent more time searching out the perfect quote for each chapter (and sub~chapter :) than writing the chapters themselves!

Tracey- a very Merry Christmas albeit a tad tardy!!

I bookmarked Kathyrn's blog entry to use for our financial classes we do- there are some great quotes there and much wisdom!!

I have so enjoyed getting to know you this year- you have been a blessing knowing that there are others in our world with the same values and desires to be a humble servant to our Lord.

You must look us up if you are ever down Colorado way- it would be so much fun to meet you in person. I know it would be kindred spirits time!

You know, I think the word "Frugality" has developed a bad reputation. Did you know that the root of the word "frugal" is "frugalis" and "frux"...two Latin words that mean "SUCCESS"?! When I looked up the root of the word "Cheap" I found it was directly related to the Latin word for "miser". Those ancients seemed to know a thing or two about distinctions!! :)
Love your observation about what this quote points out~~ we GAIN from acts of frugality!
Love and good thoughts from Tracey.

hi Tracey! Happy belated Christmas to you too! sounds like you guys had a fun Christmas. Chinese food? oh, i would have loved that. sometimes it's just fun not to do the traditional meal. well at least you didn't have to clean up. LoL!! i was in the kitchen for days. how's your mother-in-law? was it her that fell ? well i'm happy that she doing better. sometimes falls are just not to good for older people. my grandmother is in Mississippi and i pray everyday that she doesn't fall getting out of the tub or just walking around the house.

how's your family? you guys went down to San Diego too? how was the weather? i know it was beautiful. Christmas day was very pretty all over California. i feel so sorry for those in the mid-west and back East states. have you seen the news? i've never been in snow like that, and i don't think i'll be too happy.

i'm happy to hear that you all had a wonderful Christmas. ours was beautiful too. now i'm looking forward to the New Year. as always i am keeping you and your family in my prayers. have a beautiful week my friend. i'll talk to you soon! :)

God Bless,
Charmaine

Oh Charmaine...thank you...I am lovin' and appreciating your powerful prayers and all the good thoughts... so very much!

So nice to hear that you and your family enjoyed a beautiful Christmas!!
Yes, we drove down to San Diego on Christmas Eve morning and enjoyed a nice day and evening with my Dad. On Christmas morning we (I :) made a nice big breakfast for everyone and then we all relaxed a bit until we got a call that Mike's mom had a little fall. Mike and I wanted to check on her so we waited for my Brother and his family to arrive at my Dad's, then we all drove back up to see Grandma Ruby (Mikes mom). The girls were with us plus one of Katie's friends from out of state and we all trooped up and down the coast...listening to Christmas music and just enjoying the gorgeous, sunny weather. Clancy had to work and couldn't get down, but will be making a visit after the first of the year.

Thankfully, Grandma Ruby's fall wasn't a bad one, just scary with some bad bruises and a skin tear on her arm. So we had our Christmas Chinese food and spent the afternoon and evening with her. It was fun because we could tell she really enjoyed it and Mike's brother and his wife were there too and they are both great people. It turned into a nice, fun visit! So, while our Christmas was unconventional, it turned out to be a blessed and happy day for our family after all! To top it all off, we stayed on budget and there are no financial holiday hangovers.

There was a little sad news, however. One of Rosie's good friends' brother was in a terrible car accident on Christmas eve (PCH). His older cousin, in the same car, was killed and her friends brother was in critical condition. She woke us up at about 2 AM on Christmas to tell us the sad news. Her friend had texted and was asking everyone to pray for his survival (they didn't think he'd make it). So, needless to say we all prayed heavily. The next day his doctor declared that he was out of danger and it was a "Christmas Miracle". He still has a multitude of injuries that will take months to heal, plus the emotional aspect (he's only 18). So please say a prayer for perfect healing in every way for him and his family. (And, of course, a comfort prayer for the family of the cousin.)

I am off now to enjoy my first cup of coffee! Thank you again for your prayers and blessed friendship. Oh, and speaking of prayers...please know that my prayers are with you and your family for a happy, peaceful, prosperous 2010!

Love and good thoughts, always.
Warmly,
Tracey

P.S. We lived in Massachusetts for several years when I was young and it does snow hard sometimes...and get cold! I remember marveling at the size of snow drifts as I walked past them...they were literally twice my height! It's fun when you're a child. We just thought of sledding plus it's so pretty (when you're in a nice warm and cozy house). That being said, I don't think I'd appreciate it so much now. :) xox

P.P.S. Boy, I wrote a book...and all BEFORE COFFEE!

Hi Tracey! i love when you write long comments. i just enjoy reading what you have to say. it's amazing to me how God always works what seems to be bad into something so wonderful. i'm so happy to hear that everything turned out well for your husband's mother. just look how it ended up. i know she really enjoyed herself. i just love older people. when i see them on out and about, i always make sure that they get a smile or a "how are you doing" from me. i just really have a sensitive place for them in my heart.

i'm just fascinated with them. my mother and i were taking our usual morning walk and we bumped into this old man that we would see every morning. i would always wonder why was he out so early all by himself. but this very day he talked our ears off. right there on the side walk for about 45 minutes we just talked. come to find out he was a priest from the coast of Mississippi. he was telling us how he became a priest at such a young age. he was also the first African American priest in the place where he was trained and went to school. from Mississippi to Florida to New York to teaching science at Loyola University. his story was truly amazing. he is 84 years old and still teaches at the university three times a week. he was even telling us how he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King. he was like a living history book. he was a very smart man and it was a joy talking with him.

i'm just really happy that she is doing better. i hate to hear things like that because as they get older they become more fragile.

that was so nice for your brother and his family to go with you to check on her. that's what Christmas and everyday should be about, love and family taking care of one another. i love to hear how close you are to your family. this is truly a blessing. not all families can come together like that. cherish every moment please. my mother's family can't do that. she has seven brother's (4) and sister's (3) and it is so hard for them to come together. it's really sad. but my immediate family is very close. we promised each other that we be different. family is so important and i learned you must love them unconditionally, love them where they are and don't judge.

i know that drive up and down the coast was just therapudic. i love taking long drives with beautiful sceneries. especially listening to good music or having a good conversation. we took some long drives this month as we listened to 103.5. thank God for 103.5, because if you forgot your Christmas CD tune into them, they played Christmas music all day. we listen every year.

i am so sorry to hear about Rosie's friends' brother. oh my heavens, i automatically shoot straight to say a prayer for his mother. my heart goes out to the entire family and also to the one who was killed. this happened on PCH? when i drive PCH it makes me nervous sometimes. i am so sorry to hear of this, i will keep them in my prayers. God is so good!!! i am so happy to hear that he is doing better and i will pray for his recovery and mindset. there was a young man i have been praying for on my blog " He's So Faithful", he was in a terrible accident also. i found him just by looking on YouTube one day. my heart went out to his family. they were asking for prayer for his recovery. i uploaded his video on my blog and just kept him in my prayers daily. i wrote down his name and their prayer request. i checked back just the other day and now he is walking and talking. he's a walking miracle. prayer is so powerful! so i will definitely be praying for this young man and his family and also for the cousin's family. i always ask God to show me others to pray for and He always does.

i pray that you and your family will have a blessed, happy and prosperous year for 2010!! out of all my blogging experience, i am so happy that we crossed each others paths. may God keep you and bless you my good friend!! talk to you soon!:)

God Bless,
Charmaine

hi tracey, me again,
last but not least, how are your children? how's Rosie? you said she went to Disneyland the other day for her birthday? i know she had a blast. Disneyland is so pretty around Christmas time. well, hello, all the time, but around Christmas, it really is a special place to visit. i'm happy that she had a good time.

i wrote so much until i had to delete some of my comment. i was just wondering how was her day. i'm off now!

Throughout my life, I have noticed that frugality seems to breed happiness for me. It certainly comes as no surprise that saving instead of spending gives you a feeling of security. But there is something more here, I think, and it's a mix of pride in being inventive and satisfaction in using or re-using things.

Finding a use for something you might discard, or finding an acceptable way to "make do" brings a great sense of accomplishment.

Love the "golden harvest" quote - that says it all!

hi Tracey!

Happy New Year! it is early in the morning and i am so burned out! yawning, excuse me. i can hardly keep my eyes open. you should see me, i'm like a little baby sitting in her high chair dosing off. lol!! i'm not a night owl, and for the last couple of days i've been up late. anyway, i wanted to stop by and wish you a Happy New Year. we visited Pasadena today, the Rose bowl was packed and Colorado street was a mad house. the people were throwing things at our car, i said "take me home", so now were back home. we made it in before 12:00 a.m. our family tradition is to hold hands and pray, give thanks and ask the Lord to bless our family and others for the upcoming year. you and your family were in my prayers.

okay, i'm off now. sweet dreams my friend and i'll talk to you soon.

God Bless,
Charmaine

Happy New Year Morning to you Charmaine! I am so sorry to take such a long time to respond to your comment... I didn't have computer access for a day, and then we had to pack up and head down to San Diego to spend New Year's eve (and day ;) with my Dad. I am enjoying my first cup of coffee in my dad's living room, and got right on my computer to write you back. You have been on my mind so much! What an amazing story about the elderly gentleman you met. He must have sensed your and your Mom's caring and just felt comfortable opening up to you...and what a life he led! Like you said, "a walking history book". I think it's such a sad shame (and a waste!) that our modern culture does not look up to elders and learn from their life experiences as we used to. We miss so much that is valuable by overlooking them. I have heard of a project that is being done (I think in Ohio) where they are interviewing octogenarians (sp?) on video and recording their memories about history and events and even the depression stories...for posterity. I found one website with three interviews, but now I am going to really seek it out and try to post a link here. As Ben Franklin once said (I paraphrase ;) "the wise person learns from the experiences of others."!!

You are so smart. Yes, I agree completely about loving people "where they are". I love the way you put that. Family can be such a blessing. Although, we have not always been known to get along at times either! Happily, time and love are great healers and never fail if we let them work their miracles. Sometimes it starts with just one person willing to just love someone who seems at the time unlovable and that shifts the entire energy to "the deeper vibration of love". :) Sounds all sappy, but we both know how well this works. It is part of prayer power, I think. Speaking of prayers, wow, what a beautiful story about the young man who's story you stumbled across on utube! Also, thank you so much for the prayers for Rosie's friends brother. He is stable now, but has had to have some operations because of so many broken bones. It will be a painful time for him, and his family is so close, I know it will be hard on them as well...so your prayers will be/are so valuable to them.

Rosie had a wonderful birthday!! I read your post to her and then on your blog we heard the "Happy Birthday Jesus" song and just got a kick out of it all!! I always told her she was in good company! I still want to write a post on her little surprise birthday dinner that her friends organized for her last Monday. The restaurant was sooo pretty...in a storybook like house in Laguna...and the food was/is delicious! She said Disneyland was just packed and the lines were the longest she'd ever seen. Even still, she said it was so beautiful and they ended up doing Christmas shopping on Main Street U.S.A.!! Since it was her birthday, they gave her a gift certificate for $72 (it's only for annual pass holders). I had not heard of this before and it was a happy surprise for her!! The only negative thing she said was that she missed the real Christmas tree on Main Street. I guess for the past few years they've been using a fake one. So disappointing. She said you could really tell it was false and the natural pine smell we always savored was gone, of course. So sad. Those kind of things add so much to the experience.
Okay, I am off now to refresh my coffee and to start my new year!!

I pray that the Good Lord continues to bless you and your family during 2010 and beyond. Thank you for your most welcome friendship and prayers...as always. What a kind and kindred soul you are.

God Bless,
Tracey

Mimi! Happy New Year to you!! Wow, I just love your perspective regarding the richness and power behind the practice of frugality. You put it so well. I must say that I agree wholeheartedly. The practice of Frugality has the power to raise (or bring down) nations and civilizations. It seems that it took us all in the U.S. a while to learn this lesson, but now we seem to be embracing it!
Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and offer your insight. Wishing you and your loved ones a happy, peaceful, prosperous and blessed 2010.

Warmly,
Tracey
